Decoding the world

Reading is one of the four main skills in any language. I believe that teaching it should be entertaining, yet not so demanding for the young learners. Especially, that this will be done in the second language. Children should have fun with it, and they also ought to feel the real need to learn this challenging skill. Here are one of the ideas how to do it in a child-friendly way.

Look and say

I’ve chosen ‘The Look and Say Method’. This method, also known as a whole-word reading method, has both pros and cons, but in case of an ESL group of young learners I found it really useful.
However, I will not point out all the cases in which it is beneficial or not to use this approach, I’d rather take some practical point of view here.

Step by step

After presentation of some flashcards with members of family, (mum, dad, granny, grandad, brother, sister) I showed a written version of these words. I tried to pay attention to similarities between what children hear and what they can see and produce/read.

As a follow up on the next lesson, I’ve made a domino set for each group where students needed to recognise a well-known flashcard and a written version of the word.

It was fun and a challenge for them, but they made it!

I was proud and so were they. The look and say method was a success here. Later on, we practice reading more and we use other methods and techniques as well.
